Biotreatability Studies

The professionals at SiREM are experts at performing biotreatability studies including anaerobic biotreatability studies that maintain the activities of anaerobic organisms through the use of specialized protocols and anaerobic chambers. Biotreatability testing answers questions which are often too expensive or too complex to test directly in the field.  SiREM biotreatability studies are designed as replicated controlled experiments providing a high level of data interpretability.

Biotreatability studies provide information to address site specific questions such as:

  • Can target compounds be biodegraded under current site conditions?
  • What site amendments will increase degradation rates?
  • What are the expected degradation rates of target compounds?
  • What are the degradation by-products?
  • What are the maximum concentrations that can be degraded?
  • What are the synergies/inhibitions?

Modified biotreatability studies called Dechlorination Assays are also available in which concentrated biomass is resuspended in site groundwater or anerobic media. These sensitive and rapid studies provide qualitative information regarding biodegradability at a fraction of the cost of comprehensive biotreatability studies.
