Dehalococcoides bacteria are the only known organisms capable of dechlorination of PCE, TCE, DCE and vinyl chloride to non-toxic ethene. The impact: if Dehalococcoides are absent from a site, expect incomplete dechlorination of PCE and TCE with accumulation of cis-1,2-DCE. The solution is to introduce Dehalococcoides organisms, through bioaugmentation.
