Microbial and Chemical Reactions in Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) 

Dr. Kevin Finneran (Associate Professor, Clemson University) will discuss critical data used to assess the potential for MNA at sites contaminated with several major contaminants including chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbon compounds, metals and metalloids, and mixed contaminant plumes.  Jeff Roberts (SiREM) will present treatability study data where MNA was evaluated as a remedial option.



Natural attenuation (NA) can be an effective and low cost approach for remediation of contaminants in groundwater. NA includes physical, chemical and biological processes that reduce contaminant mass or concentration in soil or groundwater. Abiotic and biogeochemical degradation processes, mediated by naturally occurring reduced iron and sulfur minerals, are increasingly considered to play a significant role in NA of chlorinated solvents. Specialized analytical parameters can clarify the role of biogenic reactive minerals in NA by quantifying minerals that include iron sulfide (acid volatile sulfide), pyrite (chromium reducible sulfide) and magnetite (magnetic susceptibility). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX) is also used to visually assess these minerals. The production and regeneration of iron minerals can involve biogeochemical processes mediated by Geobacter, and sulfate reducers. These microorganisms reduce oxidized iron and sulfate species respectively, that can then precipitate into ferrous sulfide (FeS), which can promote abiotic degradation of chlorinated solvents. This webinar will cover critical data that can be used to assess the potential for MNA at sites contaminated with several major contaminants including chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons, metals and metalloids, and mixed contaminant plumes. We will assess field and laboratory data, and how to best develop a sampling and analytical plan that will benefit your site(s).

The Presenters:

Kevin T. Finneran, Ph.D, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, Department of Microbiology, Clemson University

Kevin is an associate professor of environmental engineering at Clemson University; he received his Ph.D. in microbiology in 2001 at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  He has been a professor at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, and a consultant at Geosyntec.  His expertise is environmental remediation using microbial and chemical reactions.  He is a Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), which recognizes young researchers considered experts in their field.  He owns and operates Finneran Environmental, LLC, which support clients on the most difficult or problematic environmental remediation projects.

Jeff Roberts, M.Sc. Earth Sciences, University of Waterloo.

Jeff is a Senior Manager at SiREM with extensive technical experience in the laboratory assessment and field implementation of soil, sediment and groundwater remediation technologies at sites containing contaminants including chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons and other recalcitrant compounds.  Over the past fifteen years he has conducted and managed hundreds of bench-scale batch and column treatability studies.  He also has technical experience in the growth, scale up and field implementation of several anaerobic microbial cultures for bioremediation remedies.
