Successful Remediation of Chlorinated Solvents in Groundwater Using Zero-Valent Iron and In Situ Bioremediation

Abstract

This webinar explores methods, results and regulatory outcomes from two sites at which volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were treated with two complimentary technologies; chemical reduction via hydraulic emplacement of zero-valent iron (ZVI); and, in situ bioremediation. The remedial approaches leverage the hydraulic conductivity contrast between ZVI fractures and the surrounding formation to create a subsurface treatment zone accessible through injection wells completed within the fracture boreholes. Case studies from two sites will be presented: an 87-acre former chemical manufacturing plant in California and an active aircraft parts manufacturing facility in Kansas. The California site achieved complete degradation of VOCs through tailored bioaugmentation cultures, and the Kansas facility saw a significant reduction in VOC concentrations, resulting in a “No Further Action” determination by regulatory authorities.

Over the past 18 years he has conducted and managed hundreds of bench-scale batch and column treatability studies and has technical experience in the growth, scale up and field implementation of several anaerobic microbial cultures for bioremediation remedies.
