Custom Scientific Solutions

SiREM has a long history of developing customized technical solutions for our customers. Some examples are provided below.

Need custom support for a unique project? Specialized resources for research and development? Need a teaming partner? SiREM can help.

SiREM is a leader in developing products and services for environmental remediation and monitoring. When off-the-shelf products and services are not the right fit for your project, we can partner with you to provide custom scientific solutions to meet the needs of your particular project.

SiREM is actively involved in research and development (R&D) projects to find innovative solutions to complex problems; based on this work, we commercialize new products and services to address these problems. We collaborate with a large network of academic and industry partners with whom we work closely, sharing specialized knowledge and resources.

With decades of R&D and commercialization experience, we can help you develop and test custom solutions to support remediation projects, develop products, or empower you to conduct crucial research.

Together, we can help you find solutions for unique challenges, including the following:

  • Developing custom bioaugmentation cultures for your compound of concern
  • Developing custom quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) tests to track specific microbes for your process of interest
  • Bioprospecting to enrich and isolate microbes for biodegradation or other beneficial processes
  • Designing and conducing custom treatability studies to monitor remediation processes under unique conditions, or to test system design configurations
  • Conducting bioreactor testing, including on-site pilot tests using shipping containers
  • Conducting third-party product or process verification testing
  • Supporting pilot-test design

Project Examples

Custom Culture Scale-up and In Situ Biomat Application

SiREM scaled up an anaerobic tetrachloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, and trans-1,2-dichloroethene-degrading bioaugmentation culture (WBC-2) for the United States Geologic Survey, which was used in a reactive mat application to treat groundwater seeps at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. This culture was subsequently scaled up for commercial use as one of SIREM’s KB-1 Plus cultures that is widely in use today. For more information, click here.

Landfill Pilot Test System Design Support

Working with an engineering design partner (Geosyntec Consultants), SiREM provided conceptual design support for a container-based in situ system to test leachate system biofouling control at the Region of Waterloo Landfill in Ontario. Project scope also included sampling and analysis program support and application of specialized methods including adenosine triphosphate (ATP) analysis, next generation sequencing (NGS), and sole carbon source isolation to isolate microbes relevant to biofouling.

Canadian Government Scientific SR&ED Tax Incentives

The Canadian government offers tax incentives for eligible R&D under the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive program. Corporations, individuals, trusts, and partnerships conducting research in Canada may be able to claim a deduction against income or earn an investment tax credit. Work performed by SiREM at our Canadian location in Guelph, Ontario, may be eligible for SR&ED credits.
