Project Examples

Custom Culture Scale-up and In Situ Biomat Application

SiREM scaled up an anaerobic tetrachloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, and trans-1,2-dichloroethene-degrading bioaugmentation culture (WBC-2) for the United States Geologic Survey, which was used in a reactive mat application to treat groundwater seeps at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. This culture was subsequently scaled up for commercial use as one of SIREM’s KB-1 Plus cultures that is widely in use today. For more information, click here.

Landfill Pilot Test System Design Support

Working with an engineering design partner (Geosyntec Consultants), SiREM provided conceptual design support for a container-based in situ system to test leachate system biofouling control at the Region of Waterloo Landfill in Ontario. Project scope also included sampling and analysis program support and application of specialized methods including adenosine triphosphate (ATP) analysis, next generation sequencing (NGS), and sole carbon source isolation to isolate microbes relevant to biofouling.

Canadian Government Scientific SR&ED Tax Incentives

The Canadian government offers tax incentives for eligible R&D under the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive program. Corporations, individuals, trusts, and partnerships conducting research in Canada may be able to claim a deduction against income or earn an investment tax credit. Work performed by SiREM at our Canadian location in Guelph, Ontario, may be eligible for SR&ED credits.
