Woman working in a laboratory

Ioanna Malton, M.Sc.

Staff Scientist

Ioanna joined SiREM in December 2021 and quickly became a valuable part of the treatability team. She completed a B.Sc. at the University of Waterloo in Biomedical Sciences, where she focused her studies on microbiology. Following her undergrad, she completed an M.Sc. also at University of Waterloo, in hydrogeology and water cycle modelling, where she worked on a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists. There she brought together her microbiology experiences to inform the assumptions made in a conceptual groundwater model of the degradation of BTEX by microorganisms.

At SiREM, Ioanna has expanded her focus and expertise beyond the treatability team and has also become involved in bioaugmentation culture feeding and maintenance, new cultures research and development, and analytical team support. She enjoys working together on multi-disciplinary teams, bridging the gaps between various focal areas, and is looking forward to learning more!

In her free time, Ioanna loves to make art or crafts, go for a walk with her poodle (Kubuś), or spend time with her family especially her niece and nephews.

“Working at SiREM, I’ve learned so much about developing new technologies and being innovative every day – it’s superb to see us all come together.”
