Molecular Biological and Isotopic Tools for Site Remediation Assessment and Optimization in Australia

Date: Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. AEST

Abstract

Molecular biological and isotopic tools can now be accessed through SiREM’s location in Brisbane, Australia. These techniques include quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for microbes and functional genes critical for bioremediation and compoundspecific isotope analysis (CSIA) to confirm and quantify degradation processes. Uses of these advanced methods include monitored natural attenuation, optimization of enhanced bioremediation applications, and forensic investigations. This presentation will provide an overview of SiREM’s products and services and include case studies of their use in Australia.

The Presenters

Phil DennisSenior Principal Scientist, SiREM
Phil is a Senior Principal Molecular Biologist and a founding member of SiREM. He is based in Guelph, Canada, and brings more than 30 years of experience in research and management of molecular biology, microbiology, and environmental remediation applications. At SiREM, he focuses on directing molecular genetic testing services and managing research and development.
Kevin Kuntze, PhDCEO, Isodetect
Kevin is CEO of Isodetect in Leipzig, Germany. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Leipzig, which explored anaerobic biodegradation of groundwater contaminants. Over the past 16 years, Kevin has developed many innovative tools in molecular biology and CSIA for the assessment of in situ degradation of organic contaminants.
Matthew Lee, PhD Senior Professional, Geosyntec
Matt is a Senior Professional Scientist based in Perth, Australia, with more than 25 years of experience in anaerobic microbiology and environmental chemistry. He characterizes anaerobic microorganisms that transform toxic anthropogenic substances into environmentally benign end products and brings expertise in researching degraded halogenated organic pollution in anoxic groundwater and soil.
