Brent Pautler, Ph.D. and Michael Healey (Ontario) will present “Passive Samplers for Sediment & Water for PCBs, OC Pesticides, Metals and other Inorganic Analytes” in an “Ask the Experts” Webinar Series hosted by Eurofins at 1:30 p.m. EDT on June 23, 2020.

Brent and Michael co-present with Patricia McIsaac, Sediments, Tissues, Dredged Material, LEAF & CCR Product Manager for Eurofins TestAmerica.

Brent Pautler is the Customer Service Coordinator at SiREM and an environmental analytical chemist with advanced technical experience in passive sampling, spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry, and chemistry informatics. Throughout his career, he has worked with scientists, engineers, and consultants, applying his chemistry and information technology expertise to help them solve unique problems in the laboratory and the field. He is the lead contact at SiREM for passive sampling products and services for sediment pore and surface waters (SP3™, SPeepers™), the Waterloo Membrane Sampler (WMS™) and the KB-1® bioaugmentation cultures.

Michael Healey is a Senior Laboratory Technician based in Ontario with more than six years of experience focused on bench-scale studies to evaluate remediation technologies for chlorinated solvents and other recalcitrant compounds and the development of SiREM’s SP3™ passive sampler.

In 2018, TestAmerica was acquired by Eurofins Scientific; the world leader in environmental, food, pharmaceutical products testing and Agroscience contract research organization (CRO) services. A publicly traded company with over 45,000 staff in more than 800 laboratories across 47 countries, Eurofins collectively offers more than 200,000 testing methods. The combined Eurofins Environment Testing US and TestAmerica footprint of locations in the USA includes 35 laboratories and over 40 service centers delivering innovative technical expertise and comprehensive analytical testing services. Through continued investment in people, technology, instrumentation and infrastructure, Eurofins and TestAmerica are support clients in both the public and private sector.

Webinar Description

Passive sampling devices (PSDs) present numerous advantages over conventional sample collection methods for quantifying hydrophobic organic compound (HOC) availability in sediment, soil, surface water and storm water. PSDs can provide superior convenience, cost and data quality compared to conventional grab or mechanically extracted samples. A major advantage of PSDs is their property of quantifying only the freely dissolved, bioavailable, fraction while not measuring the sorbed, or non-bioavailable fraction. Measuring only bioavailable contaminants with PSDs provides a better measure of actual toxicity and mobility for environmental receptors and a lower tendency towards toxicity overestimation than conventional sampling methods.

This presentation will highlight examples where PSDs have been used in the laboratory and in the field for decision making in site investigation and remediation, including techniques and advancements that simplify and improve ease of sampling, increase data quality and lower costs. We will demonstrate how a combination of an in situ application of peepers as PSD to analyze sediment porewater mobility of heavy metals and ex situ testing with polyethylene PSDs for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and organochlorine pesticide (OCP) porewater concentrations was applied to site investigation.

The presentation will also provide updates on diverless deployment methods for PSDs used in waterways and how they can be used to improve sample deployment and retrieval. Further advances to deep sediment sampling will also be showcased, demonstrating how a single sampler can be divided into smaller segments to represent discreet depths in the field. These advances continue to demonstrate that passive sampling is a mature technology that has a variety of applications that continues to expand.
